6 Morning Habits For Your Productive Morning Routine
Have you ever observed that the most successful, productive people around you just have different routines than you? Well, those routines started with forming habits, and those habits became what their life is today. You are the habits you form whether you realize it or not. These decisions start from the time your eyes open in the morning. You have a choice whether or not you will have a productive day. Forming morning habits that set you up for success each and every day is SO important. Not only does having a mindful morning routine give you back time for yourself, but it also allows you to ground yourself and truly go after what you want in life. I have seen evidence of these great habits in my own life as a business owner, investor, wife, and friend. These six-morning habits will lead you to a productive morning routine and ultimately transform your life. Better yet, I do these morning routine ideas all in an hour each morning!

Personally, I used Hal Elrod’s “SAVERS” model when I crafted my morning routine, and I have added my own personal touches to make it complete to me. I got this model after reading Elrod’s book, “The Miracle Equation.” In my blog post about the mental benefits of running, I talk more about his book’s effect on my life, but I HIGHLY recommend you read it if you are interested in developing a more productive morning routine
1.Silence (5 minutes): This step just clears your mind and gives you peace. It doesn’t necessarily have to mean straight silence. This step in your routine can also incorporate guided meditation or prayer. It is totally up to you and what you are interested in. It does take time to silence the voices and noise in your head while you are doing this step, but after practice, the silence is SO refreshing. In this “SAVERS“, element you are preparing yourself mentally to encounter the day with grace, peace, and assurance. You get to drown out the noise during this time in the morning and get grounded for whatever lies ahead that day. This looks different for different people. I usually pray or use a guided gratitude meditation on my Smiling Mind App. As I pray or do a gratitude exercise, my body relaxes and I am more mindful of my thoughts and mental state. You will be amazed at how this affects your thoughts and temperament as you start the day.
2. Affirmation(5 minutes): Now, let me start by saying…some people think affirmations are cheesy. They picture someone standing in front of their mirror repeating “I am the best. Be the best” type phrases like you may see characters do in the movies. While it may seem awkward at first (it definitely did for me), incorporating affirmations of your dreams, who you are, and who you want to be is such a key component to getting you into the right mental state to get to those goals. You are forming your identity in these proclamations that you are making for your life. I repeat statements each morning about who I want to become and the things I want to achieve. It implants those ideas into my brain and allows me to dwell on those thoughts throughout the day. There have been so many times when I am having a bad day that these phrases pop into my head. It’s crazy how it can change how I perceive and respond to a negative circumstance in front of me. My affirmations are things I want to believe in myself that are based on what is important to me in my life. Sometimes it can be hard to come up with affirmations. Here are some examples of affirmations that I say each morning. Feel free to take these and tweak them to your own liking. There is no right or wrong way of creating affirmations. If you want more ideas on affirmations, definitely Google common ones and build off of those. It’s a great start to your morning habits.

I am driven, organized, and capable of reaching any goals I have set my mind to. As long as I work hard and love others, I will keep my mindset right and achieve my goals.
I believe in my story, its power, and its ability to change lives. My story will impact the lives of millions and will provide hope to those in need.
I will fuel myself with the best fuel full of rich nutrition and thoughtful eating. My body will be strong and supported in its endeavors.
I can control the controllables each and every day, and I can accept what I cannot control.
I learn from my mistakes and set boundaries.
I forgive myself for not being perfect because I know I am human.
I am thankful for Devin and thankful for a caring spouse who loves me.
3. Visualization (5 minutes) I am a firm believer in visualizing what you want in life. This step in my morning routine has been a huge win for me. I don’t know about you, but as an athlete, visualization was very important as I prepared for games and competitions in track. Just visualizing yourself doing the necessary things to win each moment is a great part of a productive morning routine and sets the tone for that activity. When you visualize, you are preparing yourself to act a certain way and you are telling the rest of your body your expectations. Now as a business owner, I visualize a successful day. I answer the question: what would an awesome/successful day look like today? I walk myself through the tasks and meetings I have outlined in my planner. I picture the successful completion of those tasks. Each and every one of them. I visualize myself completing them with ease and within the time that I allotted. For meetings, I visualize my interactions with those individuals. I visualize efficient and effective meetings. If I am meeting with a prospective client, I visualize successful interactions where I am confident and impress the client. Visualizing has definitely helped my confidence and preparation as a professional. Each day that I do this exercise, I feel ready to conquer the day, and I DO. Start by just writing down what you have to do for the day and close your eyes. You can listen to music or do this in silence, whichever you prefer. Then begin to walk through each of those tasks or interactions you anticipate and walk yourself through each task going successfully. If you need to say things under your breath or out loud, do it! Sometimes it is easy to get distracted by the voices in your head. When that happens it’s okay to take control and talk out what you are visualizing to help yourself through the practice.
4. Exercise: (15-30 minutes) I did a poll the other day on Instagram, and most people said they enjoyed working out later in the day as opposed to in the morning. I totally respect that. Now in Elrod’s book, he mentions that implementing exercise each morning doesn’t mean it has to be an intense workout. It could be as simple as going for a quick walk or doing a 15-minute yoga sequence. Because of my loaded day, I use this time to do a full workout as I don’t have time later in the day most days to get it done. This exercise wakes me up and it makes me feel like I have already completed something to start the day. It makes me more alert for the activities ahead too. Even if you don’t do an intense workout in the morning, just moving your body is SO important to get your blood flowing and get your body alert. Find what you enjoy and what works for you!
5. Reading: (10 minutes) Filling your mind with new ideas each day helps you continue to grow into the person you want to be. You could read business books, marriage books, health books, etc. It really is up to you! Whatever you would like to improve on. For me, I read my Bible during this time. Currently, I am working my way through the Psalms. If I have a little more time in the morning, sometimes I throw in a couple of minutes of reading one of the books on my reading list. This helps me start my day with information flowing and investing in learning and growing. Whether I am growing in my spiritual walk or learning about investment strategies, this part of my routine gets my juices flowing as I prepare for the day ahead.
6. Scribing: (5 minutes) This step is especially important as it allows you to reflect on the previous day and express yourself through writing. Now, you don’t have to be a professional writer, this is just simple journaling. Write down things that you are working on for the day or emotions you are feeling towards someone or a situation. Journaling helps you process those emotions and feelings. Reflecting on things you are grateful for is also something very powerful to scribe about. I have journaled ever since I can remember so having it in my morning routine is something I really look forward to each day. It helps me process situations and expresses my emotions. I love writing so it’s also a way I talk to God. I love being able to go back over previous prayers from years ago and see how God answered or used prayer in my life today. It never ceases to amaze me. I use this time in the morning to reflect on the previous day, the day ahead, and express my gratitude for all in my life. I journal my disappointments, my anger, my frustrations, my fears, and my excitements. Starting my day in tune with my emotions and in communication with God centers my day and gives me the assurance to keep moving forward in his faithfulness as his child. I think this is a great mindful morning routine step to add into your day that will get you going off on a great start.
Implementing these “SAVERS” into my daily routine has made me more organized and intentional about MY time. That morning time is time for ME to really ground down and invest in my success. Some may see this as a bunch of “fluff” or too unrealistic. I thought the same thing at first. I thought that this routine was great for those that were already successful and had full mornings to be able to do this, but I was WRONG. Anyone can implement this routine into their productive morning routine. It may take some discipline and more thought, but you CAN do it! Start by setting your alarm for 30 minutes earlier than you regularly wake up, and build your way up to set it for a full hour earlier than your regular wake-up time. Baby steps. Start with choosing 2 of these activities to start doing, and then start implementing the others. This is what I did, and that gradual morning habit change has made all the difference. Rather than trying to do it all at once and crashing and burning, it became more sustainable if I eased in. I am also by nature a morning person, but I do believe that those that claim they aren’t morning people can implement “SAVERS”. If you struggle to wake up in the morning, here are some tricks that work for me. I set my phone away from my bed and closer to where I have set out my workout gear for the morning. This makes me get up to turn off my alarm, and I already steps closer to getting ready. I try to drink water first thing when I wake up too. That automatically helps me wake up a bit faster and shake off the grogginess.
Since doing these “SAVERS”, I feel more alert at work and even more efficient. You would think with one less hour of sleep, I would be slower and sleepier during the day, but when you set an intention for the day to start, you know what you have to do, and you get after it. My morning time juices me up for the day ahead. I am setting myself up for success intentionally and that makes all the difference. Take a moment to reflect on your morning routine and even your time throughout the day. Do you make time that is YOUR time? Do you want to set yourself up for success to help you win the day each day? Then consider implementing these morning routine ideas. Your morning habits may look different than mine. That’s okay. Everyone has what works for them. Find those activities under “SAVERS” that work for you, and just get started. Be prepared to start conquering your day!
